A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
