Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
